Some comments from the wall

Our ‘Give racism the red card’ wall is finally filling up! Learners from primary and high schools have been experiencing the Offside exhibition as part of their visit to the District Six Museum. Here are some of the comments our visitors have left behind!

We are one nation and we should be proud of being South Africans. We shouldn’t allow racism – we should just score a goal and play football as one nation and stop racism!! Lelethu Gobo

Racism is the worst FOUL PLAY in the world. There are no second chances, no yellow cards – a straightforward red card for it! Ivo Sissocak, September 2010

Soccer is meant to be played with the heart, body, mind and soul. One should not play soccer for money, but for one’s passion that is everlasting and will be passed onto generations. Galiema Jappie

Beat racism with LOVE. Amber Soulvie, North Carolina, USA

This is a groundbreaking exhibition. Racism is destruction. Unity is humanity. David, Ghana, 17 September 2010

Welcome, everyone, to a new blog brought to you by the District Six Museum. I’m Leanne, an Oxford University student interning here at the museum.

The blog is the online presence for two of District Six’s exhibitions, Fields of Play and Offside, taking place just down the road from the museum at the District Six Homecoming Centre, 15A Buitenkant Street, Cape Town.

The blog is a space for discussion and debate, comment and critique, about our exhibitions on sporting memory, and the District Six museum more widely. The two exhibitions, Fields of Play and Offside, are part of a long term effort by the museum to share residents’ stories about sporting life in District Six, Cape Town and South Africa more broadly.

Both exhibitions look at football but with different perspectives.

For more information on both exhibitions and the museum itself, click on the ‘About’ tab above and go from there. We hope you enjoy, and join in the debates!
